Agoraphobia

What is Agoraphobia?

If you are experiencing agoraphobia you may have a fear of open or enclosed spaces, being in public places or in crowds, getting stuck in a lift, or using public transport, especially where escape may be difficult or embarrassing (DSM 5). There is a lot of anticipatory fear of being trapped, feeling helpless, or especially that you could have a panic attack if you go into the feared situation. Even the thought of of getting stuck in a feared situation can feel overwhelming.

Someone experiencing agoraphobia will often avoid going to public places alone and sometimes have difficulty leaving their home. Fear of having a panic attack often goes hand in hand with agoraphobia. CBT psychotherapy for agoraphobia is similar to treatment for panic disorder.
