Adult Autism
Online Psychotherapy, Support and Counselling for Autistic Adults
If you’re an autistic adult, life can be challenging. You may feel like you’re swimming against the tide, keeping up with the demands of life. You may feel you are on the outside looking in, trying to make your way in a world that doesn’t always understand you.
Maybe you find yourself masking in social situations, constantly trying to figure out; “what is expected of me ?” or “am I getting this right?”.
A neuro-affirming approach can help you find your strengths and learn to cope with the challenges of being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world.
Finding someone who is experienced working with autistic clients is important, so that you can feel understood, and you have a safe place to explore your autistic identity.
How Can Autism therapy help?
In autism-informed therapy, you’ll have a safe place to explore your autistic identity. You will learn how to cope with sensory sensitivities, manage executive function difficulties, and navigate the social world around you.
By working with an experienced therapist and social care worker who understands autism, you can begin to make positive changes in your life.
What are the benefits?
- Learning how to communicate in ways that are important to you.
- Managing difficult emotions such as anxiety, overwhelm and shutdown.
- Developing skills to feel more organized and in control of everyday tasks and appointments, such as in college or at work.
- Understanding autistic masking and living life more on your terms.
- Coping with anxiety and uncertainty in daily life.
- Finding ways to manage sensory processing difficulties.
- Increasing your self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Exploring your unique strengths.
- Building important relationships that matter to you.
My Experience
If you are attending for autism support then our work may be outside the scope of a CBT therapy treatment plan. We will focus on supporting you within the autism specific domains of social imagination, social communication, social interaction, sensory processing, and executive function.
My qualifications and many years of experience as a social care worker working with autistic adults underpins the foundation of this support. I receive specialist clinical supervision for my work with autistic clients. My approach is wholeheartedly neuro-affirming.
If you have additional mental health difficulties, then we will integrate autism-informed CBT therapy into our work together. As a fully qualified and accredited CBT Psychotherapist in Cork, I have specialist experience working autistic adults within a CBT framework.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety, depression, social anxiety, OCD, and other mental health conditions that are common amongst autistic people.
It may also be the case that you need more general autism counselling support; a safe neuro affirming space to explore your autistic identity, your relationship with yourself, others, and the world.
Whatever is it you need, I will meet you where you are at. We will focus on what is important to you and what is bothering you the most in your life.
